From the Dust Jacket:

"Ray Houghton's first full season at Anfield could not have been more dramatic, or more tragic. Liverpool, runaway Champions of 1987-88, began the season uncertainly, despite the return of Ian Rush. Their indifferent form culminated in a 3-1 mauling by Manchester United on New Year's Day which, in some ways, was the turning point of the season.

They emerged stronger than ever and began a run of victories which took them surging to the top of the table and to a FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest. A second double in four seasons loomed for the Reds.

But, on 15 April, the semi-final at Hillsborough was halted after just six minutes after some Liverpool fans spilled onto the pitch with the horrific news that people were being crushed to death on the terraces. In all, 95 people died in the chaos. For a while, Liverpool's season hung in the balance and the players could not face playing football.

Houghton tells of the efforts made by this close-knit club to help the bereaved families and how it was the strength and determination of those who suffered most that persuaded the players to continue. The pursuit of the double became a mission as a tribute to the victims of Hillsborough. Liverpool won a thrilling FA Cup final against neighbours Everton, but lost out on the League in the last seconds of the Championship decider against Arsenal.

Ray Houghton's Liverpool Notebook shows how he and his team-mates coped with the problems and tragedies of the season, and their joy at their triumphs. He also reveals the behind-the-scenes habits, traditions and superstitions of the club which have helped to bring them so much success."
