April 1810 finds ten year-old Ben Walker, his father, his dog and their horse walking with away from their Tennessee homestead. After the recent death of his mother, his father sold the farm, packed their few belongings and headed downriver with plans to return to Georgia or South Carolina.
When his father mysteriously disappears from the tavern where they spend their first night, Ben finds he has no choice but to stay and work for the surly tavern keeper.
Stated First Edition with intact number line indicating First Printing. The hardcover book has pictorial boards with shelf wear on the bottom of the boards and the lower corners are bumped. The pages are white with light foxing to the outside page edges. The only writing or marks seen inside or outside the book is a gift inscription on the front free end page.
